Dear Members
Welcome to this edition of the AUSJET/ADCVA newsletter.
The AUSJET24 Conference subcommittee is busy working with Expertise Events to make this conference even more successful than the last. Further in the newsletter you will see EOI’s to join panel discussions at the conference this year, I encourage everyone to have a think about the topics and who would be best suited to participate in these discussions. The feedback we received from the last conference and member engagement, revealed that these panel discussion topics listed below have been the topic of most interest. They are very industry specific and touch on the challenges from all our member demographics, whether they be contractors or suppliers.
This coupled with the Live Demonstrations, Large Exhibitor Space and some surprises to be released shortly, will make for a very successful AUSJET24 Conference.

You may have seen EOI’s for the AUSJET/ADCVA Innovation Safety Awards, we are very excited to announce these awards, they are designed to recognise the good work being done in our industry with regards to safety, wellbeing, innovation and customer service.
The awards criteria are:
Contracting Company Award:
Awarded to an organisation that can demonstrate a sustained safety performance and/or culture in a workplace that incorporates the implementation of innovation, physical and mental wellbeing, health, and safety initiatives.
To enter this category an organisation must demonstrate how innovation has led to a safer workplace, and outline the initiatives implemented that have improved both physical and mental health and safety outcomes and improved their overall organisational safety culture.
Supplier Award:
Awarded to an organisation that has improved industry safety through innovation, via the introduction of new products or the enhancement of existing products or services.
To enter this category an organisation must demonstrate how they improved safety through innovation.
Operator Award:
Awarded to an outstanding industry operator who leads from the front in the promotion of a safer workplace, strives to provide a quality service to their customers and is an effective team member.
To enter this award nominees are to provide evidence of how they promote a safer workplace, and how they interact with their customers and team mates to meet the criteria of the award.
The awards will be held annually, and the finalists and winners will be voted on by the AUSJET / ADCVA Health & Safety Forum. The announcement of the winners in a conference year will be held at the conference and a non-conference year they will be announced at the AGM.

AUSJET/ADCVA are calling for expressions of interest for Discussion Panel Members.

Panel Discussion – How we moved forward in creating awareness with asset Owners and Tier 1 contractors of high pressure water and Vacuum, applications, safety, are they more involved in the industry now as compared to two years ago. What do we need to do to progress this further.
The panel discusses how the industry can create awareness with asset owners of the dangers of high pressure water and vacuum, and the importance of safety and standards. How do we get them involved?

The panel discusses the use of automation, robotics and semi automation to make high pressure water jetting activities safer by removing the operator from a direct interface with water jetting tools.

How Does It Work?
Companies are to nominate themselves for the Contractor and Supplier awards and anybody can nominate an operator for the Operator award. All nominations must provide a submission that clearly demonstrates how they meet the criteria for that particular award. Provide as much information as possible including any client/customer feedback, photos and or videos.
The awards will be held annually, and the finalists and winners will be voted on by the AUSJET / ADCVA Health & Safety Forum. The announcement of the winners in a
conference year will be held at the conference and a non-conference year they will be announced at the AGM.
All nominees will be featured in the AUSJET / ADCVA newsletters and social media posts leading up to the conference or AGM, depending on the year.

North East Water
Based in
Victoria
North East Water provides water and sewage services to an estimated population of 115,000 people in 39 towns in north-east Victoria.
The service delivery area is bound by Corryong, Yarrawonga, Benalla and Dartmouth. Approximately 90% of our customers are residential with the remaining, either commercial or industrial.
We operate 21 water treatment facilities and 22 wastewater treatment plants that service most towns across the region. Our treatment plants filter and disinfect water, so that when it comes out of your tap, it’s safe and healthy to drink.
Over 215 full time equivalent staff are employed at our centres in Wodonga, Wangaratta, Benalla, Yarrawonga, Corryong, Beechworth, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford.
North East Water manages over 1200 kilometres of sewer mains that transfer sewage from customers' properties to treatment plants.
We operate 21 plants which use a range of treatment processes, from lagoon-based facilities in smaller towns through to large mechanical treatment plants in Wodonga and Wangaratta. We also operate one trade waste wastewater facility. Combined, the plants treat over 11,000 megalitres of sewage every year.
Once the wastewater has been through the treatment process and meets standards set by the Environment Protection Authority, it is used for urban and agricultural irrigation or released into waterways.
Our operations are overseen by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) on behalf of the Minister for Water. We provide urban water and sewage services as a statutory corporation under the Water Act 1989 and operate under a Statement of Obligations.

Safety Snippets
Clearing Blockages in Vacuum Systems
Clearing blockages in vacuum systems can be extremely hazardous due to high velocity vacuum and equipment that is not isolated.
NEVER ATTEMPT TO CLEAR A BLOCKAGE WITH YOUR HANDS OR FEET WHILE THE VACUUM SYSTEM IS OPERATING
Visible blockages at the end of a vacuum hose
When visible blockages at the end of a vacuum hose occur, try and dislodge the blockage with a tool (Shovel, crow bar etc). Another option is to pick the hose up and strike the end of the hose on the floor or wall. If either of these two fail - shut the system down and remove all vacuum from the system and remove the blockage by hand.
Blockages in hoses
When blockages occur inside a vacuum hose - leave the equipment running and feel along the outside of the hose for vibration. The area where there is the most vibration will be the point of the blockage. Strike this area with a bar, hammer, back of a shovel and hopefully this will clear the blockage.
Other methods include - shutting the vacuum to the hose and allowing the vacuum to build up to its maximum and then opening the vacuum valve to allow a sudden rush of flow through the hose. At the same time this is occurring water can be added to assist in removing the blockage. Shut the system down and reverse the hose ensuring the connection is secured.
Blockages within the system
Ensure the vacuum system is shut down and all vacuum has been released from the system. Remove all residual energy from hydraulic/pneumatic valves, booms and components and isolate to prevent inadvertent operation.
Remove hose connections only and inspect and remove blockages. If mechanical intervention is required to access components of the system; it is recommended that these repairs be conducted by mechanically qualified and authorised personnel.
Incident Reporting
One of the responsibilities of being a member of AUSJET/ADCVA is to report all incidents. It is important we communicate all incidents within our industry to prevent them from reoccurring and to improve industry safety both here in Australia and now globally through the GICC Global Industrial Cleaning Coalition.
All information is kept strictly confidential and can be reported through our website safety/report-an-incident-/, or directly to our administrator Gabe Wardle support@ausjetinc.com.au. In all cases we request the contact details of the person reporting the incident, so we can work with them to develop an industry safety alert.
When developing the industry safety alerts any reference to the company that had the incident, or the location of the incident is removed. Prior to publishing the safety alert, we send a draft of the alert to the reporting person for their approval prior to distributing the alert to our members and on social media.
What should be reported?
To truly improve industry safety, we would like to see all incidents involving High Pressure Water Jetting, Vacuum Loading, Drain Cleaning and Hydro Excavation reported including:
- Accidents
- Injuries
- Near Misses
- Environmental Incident
In some circumstances we understand that some incidents may be placed under legal privilege. In these instances if possible we would request that members simply advise AUSJET/ADCVA that an incident has occurred without specific detail, then at the completion of the investigation and the period of privilege, we can then work together to develop a safety alert.
